Strip tickets for bus and tram journeys

You can travel by bus or tram throughout the Netherlands using either a nationwide multi-journey ticket (generally known as a 'strip ticket') or a season ticket. The Netherlands will soon be adopting a new chip card for public transport users that will be valid on all modes of transport, i.e. trams, trains, buses and underground railway lines. There is also a special family pass known as a 'buzzer'.

Different types of strip tickets

Strip tickets come in a variety of sizes, i.e. with different numbers of strips. The smaller tickets, i.e. consisting of two, three or eight strips, are sold only on buses.

Students holding a public transport pass for students, pensioners in possession of a 'Pas-65' pass or some other form of identification and children aged from 4 to 11 are entitled to travel on reduced-rate 15-strip tickets.

Where can you buy strip tickets?

You can buy small tickets, i.e. consisting of two, three or eight strips, from bus drivers. However, it's much cheaper to buy your ticket in advance, from a ticket office.

How many strips do you need to stamp for a journey?

The number of strips you should stamp consists of one strip plus the number of zones through which you intend to travel. If you're unsure about how many strips to stamp, please ask the driver. He will tell you the number of strips and stamp your ticket for you.

Where can you use strip tickets?

You can use strip tickets on all bus and tram services in the Netherlands (with the exception of the Interliner 395 service). Strip tickets remain valid for a period of 12 months following a price rise.
